Kiryowa Kiwanuka Nsumikambi Mugambe commonly known as Kiryowa Kiwanuka is a Ugandan lawyer, businessman and politician who serves as the Attorney General of Uganda in the Ugandan Cabinet. He was appointed to that position on 8 June 2021, replacing William Byaruhanga, who was dropped from cabinet.
Background and education
Kiwanuka was born in Uganda circa 1972. His father, the late Jimmy Mugambe Kiwanuka was a Ugandan lawyer. His late paternal grandfather, Jolly Joe Kiwanuka, was a Ugandan politician who was murdered by dictator Idi Amin in the early 1970s.
Kiryowa spent his early childhood in Nairobi, Kenya, where the family lived in political exile, before returning to Uganda in 1980. He attended Budo Junior School for his elementary school. He then transferred to Kings College Budo for his O-Level studies. For his A-Level education, he studied at Makerere College School. In 1993, he was admitted to Makerere University, Uganda’s oldest and largest public university, to study law.
Kiryowa Kiwanuka graduated from Makerere University, with a Bachelor of Laws degree. He then attended the Law Development Centre, graduating with a Diploma in Legal Practice. He was admitted to the Uganda Bar in 1997. Later, he was awarded the degree of Master of Laws in Petroleum Law and Policy by the University of Dundee in Scotland.
Olivia heads the Dispute Resolution practice of Ligomac Advocates. Her ten years’ experience covers representing financial institutions and corporate entities in contractual disputes, security enforcement and employment matters.
Prior to focusing mainly on dispute resolution, Olivia spear headed the firm’s securities audit and perfections practice to support risk teams in financial institutions. She has also worked on tax transaction assignments in the areas of corporate tax and customs.
Olivia is keen on sharing the knowledge she has acquired over the years. As such, she is a member of the Ugandan Faculty of the Justice Advocacy Africa, a non-government organization, affiliated to the National Institute for Trial Advocacy Minnesota, that trains Advocates and Lawyers in Trial Advocacy skills, where her services in this regard are on pro-bono basis.
She is a member of the Uganda Law Society, East African Society, Young International Arbitration Lawyers and the Editorial Board of the Uganda Law Reports. She is also a lecturer at the Law Development Centre where she shares her knowledge and skills with upcoming advocates.

He is the current President of the International Bar Association.
Angella has over (2) years’ experience in Corporate law and transactions. She provides general corporate advisory to the Firm’s corporate clients and conducts legal due diligences for companies that choose mergers and acquisitions as their strategic pathway, while advising on potential legal risks and rendering practical legal advice on regulatory compliance. She is routinely involved in the incorporation of companies and corporate insolvency. Prior to joining the Firm, Angella worked with a Law Firm in Kampala where she gained vast experience in commercial transactions and property/ real estate, intellectual property. Angella is also knowledgeable on Banking and Finance. Angella is currently pursuing a course at the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators and vice chairperson of the ULS Young Lawyers Committee.
John Jet Tusabe is the Tax Advisory Director of BDO in Uganda. Jet is an authority in international taxation including transfer pricing and cross-border tax issues, over the years he has established a successful track record in supporting various entities in tax planning, and evolution of tax efficient models of operation including supporting companies raising capital or investors financing businesses through private equity and debt. Jet was selected by the Capital Markets Authority as an Issuer Resource Person supporting businesses in raising patient capital. Jet worked in senior positions at Uganda Revenue Authority and KPMG before joining BDO. Jet holds an Advanced Diploma in International Taxation from the Chartered Institute of Taxation (UK), a Certificate in Revenue and Tax Administration from Uganda Revenue Authority, a Bachelors of Statistics degree from Makerere University and is currently a student of the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) level II.
David is a professional investment advisor and fund manager with over 12 years’ experience in private equity fund management in the small to medium cap size enterprise segment in East Africa. His current practice is as an investment director with Pearl Capital Partners – a specialist agribusiness fund manager of private institutional capital with a wide footprint in East Africa, including Ethiopia and southern Africa (Malawi and Mozambique). Over the last 15 years, Pearl Capital Partners has managed in excess of US$ 60 million working with circa 40 enterprises. David has also worked in various capacities in the public debt and public equity markets.
David holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation and is a founding member of the CFA Society of East Africa, where he served on the Board. He completed his undergraduate at Makerere University with a Bachelor (Hons) of Arts in Economics.
David’s philosophy revolves around making capital available and effective in its management. Pheona Wall is an advocate and Chartered Mediator with a Bachelors’ Degree in Law, a Diploma in Legal Practice and an MBA in Management. She is a governance professional and a public relations practitioner with over 15 years’ experience currently serving as the Senior Manager Legal Services National Water and Sewerage Corporation, a position she has held since June 2014. She is also a Registered Trustee of Zamara Retirement Fund.
She is currently the President Uganda Law Society, having served as Secretary then Vice President and the Chairperson of the Legal Aid and Pro Bono Project of the Uganda Law Society.
Pheona also currently serves as a Council Member of the Judiciary Council and also serves on the Governing Council of the East African Law Society
She seats on the ICAMEK and CADER Arbitration Center Boards.
Pheona is a Governance Expert who trains Boards in Governance under the Institute for Corporate Governance Uganda and has also served on various Boards including Zamara Retirement Fund, Water FC, Future Investments Group, East African Young Water Professionals, Uganda Law Society, and Public Relations Association of Uganda.
Pheona was awarded the Hague Institute for Innovations in Law “2018 Talent to Watch” award and is a two time awardee of the New Vision 40 under 40 award for 2018 and 2020.
Pheona was also awarded the French German Elysees Peace and Reconciliation Award in 2021 for her efforts towards fighting for the Rule of Law in Uganda.

Conference engagements:
Norbert Mao is a Ugandan political activist and lawyer. He has been president of the Democratic Party since 2010, three time presidential candidate and he served as the Local Council 5 chairman for Gulu District. Between 1994 and 1996, he worked as a legal counsel for the Legal Aid Project of the Uganda Law Society in their Gulu office. Also, he helped found the Great Lakes Parliamentary Forum on Peace (AMANI Forum). He was instrumental in trying to bridge the gap between the Lord’s Resistance Army rebels and the Ugandan government by lobbying for the passage of a general amnesty law aimed at bringing a peaceful resolution to armed conflict in northern Uganda. On 21 July 2022, he was appointed minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs in the Ugandan government by Yoweri Museveni, the president of the Republican of Uganda.

Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga is a Ugandan lawyer and politician who served as the Speaker of the Parliament of Uganda from 19 May 2011 until 21 May 2021. She currently serves as the First Deputy Prime Minister of Uganda. She concurrently serves as Minister for East African Community Affairs, in the Cabinet of Uganda.
She is the first woman to be elected Speaker in the history of the Parliament of Uganda. She succeeded Edward Ssekandi, who served as Speaker from 2001 to 2011.
She is also the current Member of Parliament (MP) for the Kamuli District Women’s Constituency, Busoga sub-region, a position she has held since 1989.
She is an Advocate of the Courts of Judicature in Uganda having been enrolled in 1982. She holds a Master’s Degree in Law, from University of Zimbabwe (2002 to 2003) and the first woman to establish a law firm in Uganda-Kadaga & Co. Advocates established in 1984.

Rt.Hon.Kadaga has served as a Legislature for an uninterrupted period of 27years as the Woman Member of Parliament for Kamuli district, since 1989 as National Resistance council member.
In the 27years, she was a back bencher for 7years (1996 to 1998), Minister of State for regional cooperation(1996 to 1998), Minister of State in charge of Transport (1998 to 1999), Cabinet Minister in charge of Parliamentary Affairs(1999 to 2001), Deputy speaker of parliament(2001 to 2011) and speaker from 2011 to date.

International perspective
Rt.Hon.Kadaga served the Inter-Parliamentary Union as President, Africa Region (October,2014 to 2016) and the Chairperson of Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians(2014 to 2016), having served as the first Vice Chairperson of the same organization(2009 to 2014).
She was an Executive Committee Member of the Inter-Parliamentary Union representing the African Region, and Chairperson Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians (Africa Region). In this fora she campaigned for the women emancipation in politics and governance in many regions of the commonwealth.

Ms. Christine is an advocate of the High Court of Uganda, a skilled and compassionate Lawyer, Trainer and Mediator.
Christine is a co-founded Praxis Conflict Centre to provide alternative (to the formal justice system) dispute resolution solutions to those for whom the formal justice system is alien in many ways.
Christine’s calling is to support the poor, vulnerable and marginalized in accessing justice effectively. She established Justice Centres Uganda, the first ever Government of Uganda Legal Aid Programme, under the Justice Law and Order Sector (JLOS) that has legal aid Centres around the Country, where lawyers reach out to communities to provide legal services and conflict resolution alternatives for those too vulnerable to navigate the administration of the Justice system or afford the services of a paid lawyer.
She is a former Deputy Director, International Justice Mission where she provided legal redress for widows and orphans whose property was being grabbed. Daniel is an experienced strategy, management and communications expert with a demonstrated history of working in the non-profit organization management sector. Skilled in People Management, Strategic Planning, and Program and Event planning, coordination and evaluation.
As a System Administartor at Uganda Law Society, Daniel was responsible for managing the IT infrastructure of the society in addition to anticipating and addressing the technological training needs of the staff as well as the (at the time) over 1000 members of the Uganda Law Society. Also charged with managing the electronic communication structures of the Uganda Law Society such as the group mailing lists and online discussion forums.
Daniel also worked as the Information and communications officer and Member of the management team responsible for external communication and brand management for the East African Law Society. In addition to event coordination and organization, He was in charged of managing the institution’s IT infrastructure as well as working as the membership liaison of the organisation, charged with articulating the members needs for conversion into coherent and inclusive programmatic interventions.

Denis is the Managing Partner at Cristal Advocates where he also leads the energy and tax practice. He is qualified both as a Lawyer and Chartered Accountant and is a UK trained energy, tax and investment professional with vast experience serving various industries.
Prior to joining Cristal Advocates, Denis had worked for close to 10 years with Deloitte, an international audit and professional services firm where he started his career and rose to senior managerial positions.

Silver is a lawyer and serial entrepreneur with diverse experience in law, technology, innovation and agriculture. He specializes in Fintechs, Blockchain and Artificial Intelligence mandates. He is also a co-founder of Drone Nerds Uganda, a company applying commercial drone solutions. He holds a Bachelor of Laws Degree from Uganda Christian University (UCU), a Post-Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice (Bar Course) training from the Law Development Centre, Kampala, a Master of Laws (with distinction) from the University of Pretoria, South Africa, and an Advanced Certificate in Insolvency & Restructuring under the auspices of the South African Restructuring and Insolvency Practitioners Association (SARIPA).
